Goat Island, NZ: Look, learn, play & explore in New Zealand’s first marine reserve!
There are three ways to explore Goat Island, NZ: Take a glass bottom boat tour, hire snorkel gear, or explore aboard your own kayak.
Located in Leigh (just one hour north of Auckland), the Goat Island NZ Glass Bottom Boat Kayak & Snorkel Hire runs a popular, fully commentated 45-minute tour showcasing the area’s abundant marine life, fauna, birds, reefs and caves. During the trip, guests learn about the history, preservation and protection of New Zealand’s first marine reserve.
Owned and operated by experienced skipper Scott Pennington, the 49-seat glass bottom boat “Aquador” runs multiple trips daily, departing from the beach at Goat Island Marine Reserve. Tours run pending weather and sea conditions, and marine life varies with each trip – while there are always fish, it’s not unusual to see dolphins, whales and orcas during the trip!
After the tour concludes, the exploration continues with Goat Island NZ’s kayak and snorkel hire, giving visitors the chance to get even closer to fish, birds and other marine life that call this coastal reserve home. Glass bottom, double and single kayaks are available, as well as wetsuits and full snorkel gear.
Booking is essential – and simple. Guests can book in advance through the Goat Island NZ website (www.glassbottomboat.co.nz) or by calling (09) 422 6334. Same-day bookings are accepted on the beach (up to one hour before departure). Kayaks and snorkel gear can also be booked online or purchased on the beach directly from the Goat Island NZ team. If a tour is cancelled due to poor weather or sea conditions, guests will be notified and rescheduled or refunded.
