The Waikato regions main city is Hamilton, home to over 200,000 people and the Waikato University.
The Waikato River, New Zealands longest river at 425kms, has spiritual meaning for various local Maori tribes, including the large Tainui who regard it as a source of their mana, or pride.
This region has a variety of attractions such as the Waitomo Glow worm Caves and black water rafting situated in Waitomo which is approximately an hours drive from Hamilton. The flat plains of the area are ideal for hot air ballooning tours, and each year visitors can enjoy the Balloons Over Waikato festival.
Matamata, or "Hobbiton" which it is now commonly called is one of the sites of the Lord of the Rings trilogy movie sets, where tours are available.
Raglan is a famous surf beach and holiday destination and boasts a number of unique accommodation options.
