    Tourist Activities around Methven

The Mount Hutt Ski Area is Methven’s closest skifield and one of the largest and most-established in the area.

Mt Hutt Ski Area Opening Dates for 2012 is from 9th June to 7th October.

The region’s other ski areas include Porters and Mt Cheeseman - which are relatively easy and family-friendly - and Temple Basin, Broken River, Craigieburn, and Mount Olympus – which are relatively raw and may contain off-piste areas, steep runs and deep snow.

There are many other outdoor pursuits possible in and around Methven. The Rakaia River provides good trout fishing and trails for walking or mountain biking, and is also popular for rafting and jet-boat tours, as with other rivers in the wider region, including the Selwyn, Ashburton and Rangitata Rivers. Horse trekking is popular in some of these areas.

Popular trails include the Methven Walkway, Awa Awa Rata Reserve (at the base of Mt Hutt), Rakaia Gorge Walkway, and longer walks in the Mount Somers area, a short drive south-west of Methven
