This itinerary incorporates only the South Island of New Zealand. The arrival point of this itinerary is the Canterbury region. From Christchurch take the Tranz Alpine train to Greymouth on the West Coast where you can pick up your rental vehicle. From Greymouth you can drive to Westport, then on to Hokitika, Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier.
The locals on the West Coast are known as 'coasters' and are renowned for their hospitailty and friendliness. The famous West Coast whitebait season brings visitors to the area, and whitebait dishes appear on many menus in local restaurants, pubs and cafes. The West Coast area is full of natural wonders which include the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki and the ancient glaciers of the southern alps at Franz Josef and Fox Glacier.
From here head down to Wanaka/Lake Hawea where many activities are on offer, including fly fishing for brown trout. This itinerary then takes you to the Queenstown/Southern Lakes District then on to Aoraki Mt Cook, NZ's highest peak and into MacKenzie Country. Your next stop is the small town of Methven, where Mt Hutt Skifield is around half an hour away.
Your final destination is back to the Canterbury region where both national and international flights are available from the recently refurbished Christchurch Airport.
