Make the most of your Winter Holiday
Whether you are chasing the snow or looking for a peaceful hideaway, there are plenty of great Winter destinations throughout New Zealand. From the sub-tropical North to the natural wonders in the South why not visit a new town or city and brave the weather. There’s nothing like wrapping up warm and seeing vistas in a different light. Winter can put on an amazing display right around the country, and with so many natural hot pools and a huge selection of unique accommodation, you are sure to find the perfect Winter holiday spot.
North Island
Auckland and North of the city, as well as the East Coast of the North Island have sub-tropical climates, so it is very rare to experience a bitter chill, with average temps ranging from 7C to 16C. People still surf in the North Island in the Winter, with the swells being hard to resist. As NZ is surrounded by coastline, we all struggle to stay away from the beach no matter the weather. Long beach walks and watching the sunrise and set can both calming and relaxing.
The North Island has stunning nature spots to base yourself on your holiday. You may choose to visit a town or city you have never been to, or a more remote destination. Perhaps a farmstay with a private cottage, or a waterfront property with a view of the ocean. Maybe take the family to a place with plenty of hiking and biking trails, near a lake for kayaking or a city with fun things to do.
New Zealand has so many natural hot springs, many of which has been made into public swimming pools for everyone to enjoy. It is possible to dig a hole at a beach and make your own hot pool. You may also discover natural hot water at beaches and lakes around the North Island.
Of course, skiing is probably the most popular Winter activity, but if skiing is not your thing, you can still see the snow in the central North Island and create your own Winter wonderland. Find cosy accommodation, perhaps with a fireplace where you can snuggle down and watch the snow fall outside.
South Island
With a smaller population than the North Island, and with much more dramatic scenery, the South Island beckons those looking to get off the grid in a place that seems somewhat otherworldly.
The top of the South Island may be the warmest in this region. You can still go hiking in the many national parks but be sure to pack extra layers of clothing. Being such a picturesque location, the South Island can be enjoyed just for its landscape but if you want to make the most of your visit you should go off the beaten track.
Home to most of New Zealand’s wildlife you are sure to come across seals and penguins on the beach, or native birds on your travels. Visit one of the many nature reserves, or take a boat trip to see marine life. Visiting the bigger cities you will notice the difference from the North Island. As the South Island was colonised before the North, the architecture is older with plenty of history attached.
By taking a road trip you won’t miss out on the interesting stops off the main highway. Take your time and make that stop. Stay in a small town which will welcome your custom. Take an overnight boat tour in one of the Sounds. Soak up the scenery and relax. Hunt out a glow worm grotto for a spectacular night display.
Like the North Island, the South also has snow and natural mineral pools. More snow down here through so you will almost certainly get to see the stuff if you haven’t before. Find accommodation near one of the many hot pools for a soothing soak at the end of the day.
Both islands have their own delicacies. When touring NZ incorporate the fantastic food and wine into your journey. Stop at a roadside stall for fresh in-season produce. Sample the seafood which can differ in each island. Get a real taste of Kiwi cuisine. Enjoy a Winter picnic in an idyllic location.
New Zealand is truly a magical place in the Winter. Try not to rush your way through the country. There are plenty of destinations you should visit, and you will be glad that you didn’t pass them by.
